Mid-handicap everyman reviews

Cobra have absolutely smashed it with their OPTM X driver

Cobra have absolutely smashed it: his best mid-handicap driver of 2026, and the club he's hit some of his longest drives of the year with.

+ the facts · 5 pros · 1 cons
  • +Forgiveness with adjustable weights so it won't become obsolete as you improve
  • +Some of his longest drives of the year came with this club
  • +HOT face with textured topology maintains ball speed on mishits
  • 33-way adjustability is too much to self-fit; hand someone this and a wrench and they could end up in a world of pain

For: Mid handicap golfers (roughly 10-16) who want forgiveness now and low-spin headroom as they improve

I think that's a very strong range from Cobra

The core head of a very strong 2026 Cobra range: square-sitting, great-framing, with very solid numbers and an appealing sub-500-pound price.

+ the facts · 6 pros · 1 cons
  • +Sits incredibly square with face lines that frame the ball beautifully
  • +Very solid numbers: around 2,100-2,200 spin, 272 carry, near 300 total
  • +Lively carbon sound without being muted
  • The OPTM name itself does not land for him

For: The majority of golfers; the neutral core model most players will fit into

The X is the one that surprises me the most... spin.

The core model of the lineup and the straightest of the four in this test, with six of seven shots in the fairway and carries bunched between 273 and 281, though a couple of unexplained spin spikes near 3,000 rpm bothered the low-spin-chasing fitter.

+ the facts · 4 pros · 2 cons
  • +Very consistent, six straight shots in the fairway carrying 273-281
  • +Good forgiveness with hosel adjustability plus swappable weights
  • +Great glossy all-black look with a thin alignment stripe on the crown
  • Two swings spiked 600-700 rpm in spin toward 3,000 with no clear strike explanation
  • Spins a little on the higher side for a distance chaser

For: Most golfers, the core model built for the widest range of players

A really solid overall package with unrivaled adjustability from the Future Fit 33 adapter, if the asymmetric Cobra shaping suits your eye.

+ the facts · 2 pros · 1 cons
  • +Really solid overall performance package
  • +Future Fit 33 adapter provides unrivaled adjustability
  • Asymmetric-feeling shaping is not to his taste

For: Long-time Cobra players, who will absolutely love it

this is the head we're most excited about this year

The head Cobra itself is most excited about, with the lowest POI of the four for the most accurate downrange shots; it launched a bit higher than the LS with great low-2000s spin, though Mitch personally struck the LS better.

+ the facts · 3 pros · 1 cons
  • +Lowest POI of the four heads, which Cobra says produces the most accurate shots downrange
  • +Higher flight than the LS but with great spin in the low 2000s
  • +Balanced speed, spin, and accuracy; Cobra expects many tour players to move into it
  • Mitch hit the LS more consistently and preferred the LS's deeper shape at address

For: Players between a tour head and a max head wanting speed with accuracy
